I have not made animated GIFs since the late 90’s and early 2000’s. It is strange that they seem to be making a comeback. I will admit – the whole process of choosing what to capture and why, what tools to use, and deciding what to edit, did make me think more deeply about the episode “Free for All” and what I think is the Expressionist style of directing and acting in much of The Prisoner.
Isn’t it something that we have been around enough for things to come back?
I have old handouts and “rules” I used in trainings for web development by teachers and administrators that highlight that blinking and moving things are a sign of low skills and bad taste (paraphrased here – much more eloquent in handout).
As with all things coming back – they get better and are different. Now it seems it is a strategy for helping dive deeper into understanding instead of just an annoying “under construction sign.” To me it is a tell on how things have evolved and gotten deeper and more detailed.

Ah, the good old days of the Internet, with the old Under Construction GIFs. Nothing could be gaudier, and yet they were for a while one step up from pages and pages of static text.
