Sometimes I am a painter who writes, and at other times I am a writer who paints. I have always drawn in my journals, taken art classes, ceramics, and photography. In recent years, painting has taken on more of a life of its own and a regular part of my artistic practice. I will be posting some of those efforts here if only to help me track my evolution as an artist in general.<\/p>\n

I am a late-blooming painter who arrived at visual art through writing and music. I am exploring abstraction in acrylic and watercolor as a new language after a lifetime of working with words. My current body of work consists of 8 x 8 inch paintings. I am drawn to the discipline of limitation and obstruction and the way a fixed boundary can become a site of discovery. Within that square, I want to see how far color, line, and texture can test and stretch those limits.<\/span><\/p>\n

My paintings are nonrepresentational. I work with layered color, simple shapes, and shifting edges to suggest things that are half remembered, not fully named, or long forgotten. Acrylic lets me build and revise, covering and scraping back so earlier decisions still haunt the surface. Watercolor pulls in the opposite direction, asking me to live with stains, bleeds, and accidents. Together they create a conversation between control and chance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because I am also a writer, I think of each piece as an unwritten poem, an untold story. There is nothing to decode. Instead, I am interested in what remains when the narrative falls away, and in what is created when viewers bring their own stories to the work.<\/span><\/p>\n
