{"id":1514,"date":"2016-10-20T22:17:47","date_gmt":"2016-10-20T22:17:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/geoffcain.com\/blog\/?p=1514"},"modified":"2017-07-22T16:55:45","modified_gmt":"2017-07-22T16:55:45","slug":"1514","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/geoffcain.com\/blog\/1514\/","title":{"rendered":"NWeLearn: Using eLearning in Developmental Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Not Ready for College, but Ready for College Online: Using eLearning in Developmental <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Education<\/strong><br \/>\nJennifer Kepka, Instructor at Lane Community College and Linn Benton Community College <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many colleges and community colleges shy away from offering online courses below the 100-level based on inaccurate assumptions about developmental-level learners. Take a hands-on look at 10 applicable strategies for making online learning into the supportive, intensive, learner-centered environment that Dev Ed students need. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think dev ed should expand online and there is a lot of research that says that I am wrong.\u201d She says that the research does not take into account the role of teacher training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scenarios: How can we (as teachers, admins, designers) leverage the online platform to help dev students succeed? (Jenn handed out four example dev ed student scenarios for us to discuss at our tables.)<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure the student is connected to campus resources like tutoring. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure the assignments are open ended in such a way that they are writing about their experiences.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Team teaching with a teacher who has experience with advising. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give the students opportunities to revise. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure the student is enrolled in an online orientation. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Questions come up about placement tests (accuracy, anxiety, etc.).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One suggestion was to open the pedagogy for the students and have them set the weight of tests and other assessments. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get all of the students to talk about what it takes to be a successful online student.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have materials in a variety of formats.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategy I: Learn about our learners<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why are they here?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does online allow us to know?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use introductory discussion groups<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask the students \u201cwhat do you want just your instructor to know about you?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategy II: Personalize Instruction<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accelerate or decelerate as needed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build on past strengths and confidence<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategy III: Reduce Anxiety<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share work from the start<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What about test anxiety?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Model publicly, correct privately (reply in ways that model good posting)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategy IV: Set and Explain Expectations<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does participation mean?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the time requirements? How do I manage them?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can I expect from the instructor?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most students will not read the syllabus and the first day in the f-2-f class only happens once. In an online course, they can always refer back to it online. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategy V: Offer Multiple Contact Points<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In-person<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video (Skype, Hangouts)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students should have ways of communicating with instructors that they are comfortable with. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A participant suggested the app <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.remind.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">http:\/\/www.remind.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a way to help students organize their work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategy VI: Include Valuable Technology Instruction<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online navigation can be a part of the content instead of a barrier<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make technology part of the curriculum<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Strategy VII: Reduce Cost Barriers<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use OER when possible<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offer supplemental instruction<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategy VIII: Emphasize the Campus<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just because the class is online doesn\u2019t mean the student must always be. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make a video with the librarian<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set up an online chat with the tutorial center<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategy IX: Emphasize Accessibility for All<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Readings can become lectures, and lectures can become videos, or?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students with PTSD can be more comfortable with online courses<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide alternative content<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategy X: When in Doubt, Trust Students<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open the course to suggestions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open the course changes based on student input and analytics<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can make the mistake of assuming that dev ed students are less smart. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Question: Shouldn\u2019t we encourage students to take f-2-f first? Jenn believes that there are students who shouldn\u2019t take online courses.
