The earthquake and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tsunami\" rel=\"wikipedia\" style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\" title=\"Tsunami\">tsunami<\/a><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\"> are terrible disasters and my focus on social media is in no way meant to trivialize them, on the contrary, social media will be an important component in the international response. Social media and networks after the tsunami were the only way millions of people in Japan were getting information about the scope of the disaster. So many people photographed, filmed and tweeted the tsunami that not only do researchers now have a historically unprecedented amount of data available, but lives were saved. Trapped people were able to tweet or text their location and get help. With services like <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/helpattack.com\/pledgeto\/redcross\" style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">HelpAttack!<\/a><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">, people are able to easily pledge money to the <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=46.2277777778,6.13722222222&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=46.2277777778,6.13722222222%20(International%20Red%20Cross%20and%20Red%20Crescent%20Movement)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" title=\"International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement\">Red Cross<\/a> and spread the word to others on how to help. It is very easy: you just log-in with your Twitter account, pledge an amount for every update (up to a limit you set), and after 30 days, you pay your donation.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\/\" rel=\"homepage\" title=\"American Red Cross\">The Red Cross<\/a> also has a mobile giving program: you can text &#8220;REDCROSS&#8221; to 90999 to donate $10.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.groupon.com\/deals\/international-medical-corps\">Groupon has an online offer<\/a> inviting customers to donate $5, $10, or $25 to support International Medical Corps&#8217; emergency efforts in Japan.
