The semantic web is the idea that by combining different kinds of metadata, it will be easier to find, share and combine information on the internet. According to Wikipedia: &#8220;<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">At its core, the semantic web comprises a set of design principles,<\/span><sup style=\"font-style: italic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Semantic_web#cite_note-3\"><span> <\/span><\/a><\/sup><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">collaborative <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">working groups<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">, and a variety of enabling technologies. Some elements of the semantic web are expressed as prospective future possibilities that are yet to be implemented or realized.<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Other elements of the semantic web are expressed in formal specifications<\/span>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One interesting way to learn more about the semantic web is to take a look under the hood at webpages that use semantic data.<\/p>\n<p>Uldis Bojars and Sergio Fernandez at the <a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.sioc-project.org\/index.php\/SemanticRadar\">SIOC project<\/a> have written a plug-in for Firefox that allows you to do just that:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Semantic Radar is a semantic metadata detector for Mozilla Firefox.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-style: italic;\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/downloads\/latest\/3886\/addon-3886-latest.xpi\">Install Semantic Radar<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic;\">Available <a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/addon\/3886\">at Mozilla Add-ons site<\/a>. It is a browser extension which inspects web pages for links to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Semantic_Web\" title=\"Semantic Web\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Semantic Web<\/a> metadata and informs about presence of it by showing an icon in browser&#8217;s status bar. Currently it supports <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/rdf-syntax-grammar\/#section-rdf-in-HTML\">RDF autodiscovery<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Semantically-Interlinked_Online_Communities\" title=\"Semantically-Interlinked Online Communities\" rel=\"wikipedia\">SIOC<\/a>, FOAF, DOAP and any type) and RDFa metadata detection.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">New: Semantic Radar can now ping the <\/span><a style=\"font-style: italic;\" href=\"http:\/\/pingthesemanticweb.com\/\" title=\"Semantic Web Ping Service\">Semantic Web Ping Service<\/a><span style=\"font-style: italic;\"> when metadata are detected. This allows for a community based discovery of the Semantic Web data.<\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>Right now the semantic web is a hodge-podge of many different kinds of data and systems.
